Located on the Cantabric Coast, in Northern Spain, Asturias is without any doubt one of the most beautiful parts of Spain, well worth a visit. Mountains and sea meet with elegance in this region of exceptional nature, small towns and villages.
In Asturias you can learn about the legend of Pelayo, nobleman who became first Asturian king after he “miraculously” defeated the Moorish forces in the 8th century at the battle of Covadonga, place where now stands a shrine which is a regional symbol.
Oviedo, the capital of the region, is a beautiful city with a population of 200,000. Its Gothic cathedral is impressive and it houses the Cámara Santa which is a shrine for holy relics, like the Angel Cross (Cruz de los Ángeles) and Pelayo’s Cross of Victory (Cruz de la Victoria).
Around the Cathedral Square, the capital of Asturias can be enjoyed by exploring it on foot. The Old Quarter is a pedestrian precinct and all the central parts with San Francisco Park or Campoamor Theatre are equally beautiful. Woody Allen said: “Oviedo is a lovely city, exotic, beautiful, clean, pleasant, quiet and pedestrianized. It gives the impression that the city does not belong to this world, as if it did not exist… Oviedo is like a fairy tale”.
On the outskirts of the city and only 3 kilometres away, on the slopes of Mount Naranco, we can find Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo, palace and chapel respectively, Pre-Romanesque monuments built in the 9th century by King Ramiro I and which have been granted World Heritage Site status by UNESCO.
Gijón, the largest city in Asturias and main port in the region is another very interesting place to visit. Its Chillida’s sculpture Elogio del Horizonte is impressive and one of Gijón´s most visited points.
Other interesting cities in Asturias are Avilés, industrial and fishing centre, and Langreo and Mieres, mining capitals.
